Restoring Degraded Lands

نویسندگان

چکیده

Land degradation continues to be an enormous challenge human societies, reducing food security, emitting greenhouse gases and aerosols, driving the loss of biodiversity, polluting water, undermining a wide range ecosystem services beyond supply water climate regulation. Climate change will exacerbate several processes. Investment in diverse restoration efforts, including sustainable agricultural forest land management, as well set aside for conservation wherever possible, generate co-benefits mitigation adaptation morebroadly societal well-being economy. This review highlights magnitude problem some key challenges ecological restoration. There are biophysical limits Better integrating policies jointly address poverty, degradation, gas emissions removals is fundamental many existing barriers contributing climate-resilient development.

Mapping the world's degraded lands

Degraded lands have often been suggested as a solution to issues of land scarcity and as an ideal way to meet mounting global demands for agricultural goods, but their locations and conditions are not well known. Four approaches have been used to assess degraded lands at the global scale: expert opinion, satellite observation, biophysical models, and taking inventory of abandoned agricultural l...

Restoring Images Degraded by Spatially Variant Blur

Restoration of images that have been blurred by the effects of a Gaussian blurring function is an ill-posed but well-studied problem. Any blur that is spatially invariant can be expressed as a convolution kernel in an integral equation. Fast and effective algorithms then exist for determining the original image by preconditioned iterative methods. If the blurring function is spatially variant, ...

Use of Frankia and Actinorhizal Plants for Degraded Lands Reclamation

Degraded lands are defined by soils that have lost primary productivity due to abiotic or biotic stresses. Among the abiotic stresses, drought, salinity, and heavy metals are the main threats in tropical areas. These stresses affect plant growth and reduce their productivity. Nitrogen-fixing plants such as actinorhizal species that are able to grow in poor and disturbed soils are widely planted...

Degraded lands worth protecting: the biological importance of Southeast Asia's repeatedly logged forests.

Southeast Asia is a hotspot of imperiled biodiversity, owing to extensive logging and forest conversion to oil palm agriculture. The degraded forests that remain after multiple rounds of intensive logging are often assumed to be of little conservation value; consequently, there has been no concerted effort to prevent them from being converted to oil palm. However, no study has quantified the bi...

Role of Litter Turnover in Soil Quality in Tropical Degraded Lands of Colombia

Land degradation is the result of soil mismanagement that reduces soil productivity and environmental services. An alternative to improve degraded soils through reactivation of biogeochemical nutrient cycles (via litter production and decomposition) is the establishment of active restoration models using new forestry plantations, agroforestry, and silvopastoral systems. On the other hand, passi...
